How to Block Instagram on Android (3 Ways That Actually Work)
The average Instagram user spends around a full hour per day in the app — most of it in Reels, most of it unplanned. If you've ever opened Instagram "for a second" and looked up 40 minutes later, the problem isn't your willpower. The app is engineered to do exactly that.
Here are three ways to block Instagram on Android, from softest to hardest — and where each one falls apart.
1. Instagram's built-in daily limit (easy to set, easier to ignore)
Instagram has its own time-limit feature buried in Settings → Your activity → Time spent. Set a daily limit and Instagram shows you a reminder when you hit it.
The problem: it's a reminder, not a block. When the popup appears, one tap dismisses it and the feed keeps scrolling. In practice it works for about a week, then your thumb learns to dismiss it before your brain reads it.
2. Android's Digital Wellbeing app timer (better, still escapable)
Android's built-in option is stronger. Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → Dashboard, find Instagram, and set an app timer. When time runs out, the icon greys out and the app won't open for the rest of the day.
Two weaknesses:
- The timer resets at midnight — which is exactly when doomscrolling is at its worst.
- Deleting the timer takes about five seconds, and nothing stops you from doing it in a weak moment.
Digital Wellbeing is honest-user protection. It stops the accidental open, not the deliberate one.
3. A dedicated app blocker (the one that holds)
A dedicated blocker like Reblock sits above the app itself: when Instagram is blocked, opening it lands you on a block screen instead of the feed. You can block it on a timer, indefinitely, or set a daily usage limit that locks it automatically when you hit your cap.
The part that makes it stick is Hardcore mode: once a Hardcore block starts, there is no override button, no "just five more minutes", no uninstall trick until the session ends. You make the decision once — when you're thinking clearly — instead of re-making it every time a notification tempts you.
Reblock also flips the incentive: instead of only punishing you for opening Instagram, you earn XP for every minute you stay off it, level up, and keep a streak alive by beating your own daily average. Blocking stops being a chore and starts being a score.
Which one should you use?
- Just want awareness? Instagram's built-in limit is fine.
- Want friction against accidental opens? Digital Wellbeing's timer.
- Want the app to actually stay closed? A hard blocker with no override.
Most people who are serious about cutting screen time end up combining #2 and #3: Digital Wellbeing for a global picture, a real blocker for the two or three apps that eat their day.
Reblock is a gamified app blocker for Android — block Instagram, earn XP for resisting, and level up your self-control.
